This page from a 15th-century Italian manuscript depicts St. Katherine reading from her prayer book. In the image, Katherine holds the spiked wheel upon which she was tortured by the Romans. Katherine refused to marry the emperor Maxentius in favor of remaining a virgin to honor Christ. She was popular in medieval times as the patron saint of unmarried women.
