Description
The charnal house, built in 1320, is the remaining portion of the cemetery of St Mary Spital Hospital and Priory. This charnal house is where bones that were disturbed during the digging of graves in the cemetery were stored. After the closing of the monasteries in London the charnal house was used as a home, but was eventually demolished in 1700. It was rediscovered in 1999 during archaeological excavations. The charnal house is located in Bishops Square, near Liverpool Street Station. It is subterranean and encased in glass and can be viewed from above as well as from one side via the stairs or lift leading to the subterranean viewing area.
